How Often Should You Rewire Your House?

When Should You Rewire Your House?

The tricky thing to understand about rewiring your house is that there is no set time frame, but that certainly isn’t to say that we should be complacent and our household electrics do require regular maintenance.

In the UK alone, more than 8000 house fires are started as a result of faulty wiring or malfunctioning electric circuits. Unfortunately, many of these fires result in serious injuries and even fatalities, and we know that your family’s safety is of the utmost importance.

But rather than setting a rewiring schedule every so many years, the UK building regulations require that homes have their wiring tested every ten years.

This timeframe increases if you are a landlord, in which case, you are legally required to have the wiring checked every five years. This is imperative for the safety of your tenants and may cause all sorts of issues if you do not adhere to it. This might include fines and avoided buildings insurance policy.

During these regular checks, your electrician will be able to diagnose any problems and offer a solution. At times, this may mean rewiring the entire circuit. This may seem like a large job and many people are put off doing it because of the inconvenience it may cause.

However, we must keep in mind that many homes have electrical circuits that were fitting long before the digital age. In modern times, we heavily rely on our home electricity for a multitude of tasks. This means that a lot more pressure is being put on the system; those that were installed even 20 years ago won’t have the capacity to handle the demands of today’s consumer.
