Trusted electricians in Monmouth
NICEIC‑approved and 4.9★ rated. Same‑day call‑outs and certified work in Monmouth
There’s often a thread running through the way older properties in Monmouth handle power; things were built for a different era of living. When you’re trying to run modern appliances, heat pumps, or EV chargers through systems designed decades ago, the friction becomes obvious. It isn’t always a dramatic failure that signals a problem. Usually, it starts with a flickering light or a consumer unit that feels like it’s struggling to keep up with the basic demands of a busy household.
It’s less about a single faulty socket and more about the underlying integrity of your entire electrical network. Many local buildings have unique layouts that make certain wiring configurations tricky to navigate without a clear plan. As NICEIC Electricians, MJP Electrical focuses on identifying these hidden bottlenecks early. Whether you need a full rewire to accommodate new lifestyle habits or a strategic consumer unit upgrade to ensure everything runs smoothly, the goal is a system that feels invisible because it works perfectly every time.

When you dig into this a bit, the difference between a quick fix and a long-term solution becomes clear. We don’t just look at what’s broken today; we look at how your home will function for the next ten years. This opens up a chance to install solar capacity or EV charging points that actually integrate with your existing setup rather than just being tacked on as an afterthought. We provide clear pricing and tidy workmanship because you shouldn’t have to wonder if the job behind the plaster is being done right.
In the end, it depends on reliability. You need to trust that the circuits are safe, the certifications are legit, and the person on-site understands the specific nuances of a Monmouth property. From emergency callouts to thorough EICR inspections, the work is finished with certified results that offer genuine peace of mind. MJP Electrical handles the technical complexities so you can just turn the lights on and get on with your day.

Friendly and professional service from Alan the electrical engineer. Replaced under cabinet lights in kitchen and replaced outdated PIR outside light. Clean, tidy workmanship and respectful of my property. Also spotted an issue with current fuse box which is now outdated and sent a comprehensive quote for replacement at later date. I was very happy with the care and quality of work today. Plus I was impressed with the customer service from Jordan with great communications from start to finish. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

I was quoted over £200 for a small job that ultimately cost me £80 using another electrician, but that's not what my 1 star review is for - if MJP Electrical Services want to extort customers that's up to them and I'm sure their customer base will respond accordingly. The 1 star is because I've subsequently received a reminder by both email and SMS every single day for last week badgering me to accept their quote!!Posted on Google![]()

Great service from MJP in the Withywood area. They provided all the information via email and worked with me to determine the best options for what I needed. I had a new fuse board installed, 2 new sockets and all other sockets brought up to safety standard for a reasonable price. They also performed an EICR inspection and booked me in within a few days. Our electrician Daniel was very friendly and completed everything in one day and cleaned up afterward. Fantastic job all round. I would use their service again and recommend them. Edit: I returned to MJP after one of my light bulbs ripped off leaving exposed wires. They came out on the same day as an emergency to fix it. Once again, great work I would recommendPosted on Google![]()

A: You can check directly on the NICEIC site https://www.niceic.com/householder/find-a-contractor
or read our full and detailed article here: How can I check if an Electrician is qualified and registered?
A: Every electrician hold an ECA card which proves competence and be fully qualified to 18th edition standard.
A: The simple answer is, You CAN’T. It is illegal for any person to sign off work and say he had done the work when he clearly did not. If that person is a fully fledged registered and accredited Electrician or Gas Engineer and he lies about the installation he can pretty much kiss his career goodbye.
A: Whenever an approved electrician completes any form of electrical installation work on your home, a form of certification must be provided.
Whether you’re installing a new oven, an air conditioner or replacing your switchboard or light switches, you will need a safety certificate from your approved electrician.
A: You CAN do electrical work yourself under Part P You do NOT need to get a registered electrician to verify it. For some types of work (notifiable jobs), you need to notify Buildings Control (and pay a fee) . They will then inspect the work at first and second fix.
A: From April 2013 electrical work in a dwelling, or associated with its surroundings, is notifiable to a local building control body where the work includes:
- the installation of a new circuit, whether at low voltage (typically 230 V) or extra-low voltage); or
- the replacement of a consumer unit (fusebox); or
- any alteration or addition to an existing circuit in a special location*, whether at low voltage (typically 230 V) or extra-low voltage
*A special location is a room containing a bath or shower, swimming pool or a sauna heater.
An alteration or addition to an existing circuit in a room containing a bath or shower is notifiable only where carried out in the space surrounding a bath or shower.
An alteration or addition anywhere within a room containing a swimming pool or sauna heater is notifiable.
A: Since 2005, all electrical work in dwellings in England and Wales whether carried out professionally or as DIY, and whether or not the work is notifiable to a building control body (see below), must meet the requirements of Part P of the Building Regulations. In April 2013 the requirements for England were amended.
Compliance with Part P is intended to keep you and your family as safe as possible from electrical hazards.
The requirements of Part P apply to new dwellings and to any alterations or additions to the electrical installations of existing dwellings, including full or partial rewires.
Part P states that anyone carrying out electrical work in a dwelling must ensure that reasonable provision has been made in the design and installation of the electrical installations in order to protect any persons who might use, maintain or alter the electrical installation of that dwelling from fire and injury, including electric shock.
A: By law, the homeowner or landlord must be able to prove that all electrical installation work meets Part P, or they will be committing a criminal offence.
Local authorities have the power to make homeowners or landlords remove or alter any work that does not meet the requirements of the Building Regulations.
A: Things to look for are:
- Approved by a recognised governing body like the NICEIC
- Insured – NCIEC will ensure this
- Qualified – NCIEC will ensure this
- Recommendations
- Communication
- Good Attitude
A: What you do need is to get a registered electrician to verify that what you’ve done is safe apart from some “minor” jobs like changing sockets or moving them a short distance.
What you might find is that a lot of electricians won’t verify your work, so you end up having to get them to do the job.
