Government to phase out sales of new petrol & diesel cars by 2030 – is now the right time to get an electric or hybrid vehicle?

On the 18th November 2020, the UK Government announced that it would be bringing forward the date by which it would ban sales of new petrol or diesel cars in the UK. From 2030, which is 5 years earlier than previously suggested, the only vehicles that will be sold off of new car forecourts will be either fully electric, plug-in hybrids or full hybrids.

By 2035, it has announced, all new car sales will be of fully zero emission cars.

To support this, the Government has invested £1.8 billion in infrastructure and grants to help make this happen. These grants are widely available to assist homeowners to install new home charging stations for their electric or hybrid vehicles.

As we move closer to 2030, it is unclear as to how long these grants will last and indeed, as more manufacturers move over to new technologies and stop production of petrol and diesel cars, the pressure will be on the consumer to switch over sooner rather than later.

You can read more about the changes and how it might affect you here, but in the meantime, please get in touch, if you would like more information regarding the current OLEV grants and to enquire about a grant-assisted new home charging unit installation by MJP Electrical.
