Friendly and professional service from Alan the electrical engineer. Replaced under cabinet lights in kitchen and replaced outdated PIR outside light. Clean, tidy workmanship and respectful of my property. Also spotted an issue with current fuse box which is now outdated and sent a comprehensive quote for replacement at later date. I was very happy with the care and quality of work today. Plus I was impressed with the customer service from Jordan with great communications from start to finish. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

I was quoted over £200 for a small job that ultimately cost me £80 using another electrician, but that's not what my 1 star review is for - if MJP Electrical Services want to extort customers that's up to them and I'm sure their customer base will respond accordingly. The 1 star is because I've subsequently received a reminder by both email and SMS every single day for last week badgering me to accept their quote!!Posted on Google![]()

Great service from MJP in the Withywood area. They provided all the information via email and worked with me to determine the best options for what I needed. I had a new fuse board installed, 2 new sockets and all other sockets brought up to safety standard for a reasonable price. They also performed an EICR inspection and booked me in within a few days. Our electrician Daniel was very friendly and completed everything in one day and cleaned up afterward. Fantastic job all round. I would use their service again and recommend them. Edit: I returned to MJP after one of my light bulbs ripped off leaving exposed wires. They came out on the same day as an emergency to fix it. Once again, great work I would recommendPosted on Google![]()

Download our FREE Guide - 5 Reasons to Update your Old Fuse Box
Our guide covers the benefits of fitting a new Consumer Unit to replace your old and potentially dangerous fuse box. It includes details regarding the added benefits to fitting a new Consumer Unit in terms of safety, cost and reducing risks.
Take a look at your free guide, 5 Reasons to Update Your Old Fuse Box Today.
Why you should replace the consumer unit in your Penarth home
There are several important reasons you may need to replace your consumer unit (fuse board) if you live in our service area. Older fuse boxes often lack modern safety features, putting your home, family, or tenants at risk of electrical faults, fire, and non-compliance with current regulations. If your property is experiencing frequent power trips, has an outdated or damaged consumer unit, or has been flagged during an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), it’s time to consider an upgrade to ensure ongoing safety and reliability.
Old fuse boxes are often the silent culprits behind flickering lights or those annoying trips that occur when you’re just trying to run the kettle and the toaster at once. To get a feel for it, it helps to look at the sheer amount of electrical demand modern living puts on an aging system. Penarth properties, regardless of their age, are now powering smart tech, high-draw appliances, and portable chargers that a vintage ceramic fuse board simply wasn’t designed to handle.
Right now, the trend seems to be a shift towards integrated safety rather than just reactive repairs. A Consumer Unit Replacement isn’t just a box swap; it’s a fundamental upgrade to your property’s safety infrastructure. By installing a modern unit with sufficient RCD and SPD protection, you’re creating a buffer against power surges and making it much easier to isolate specific circuits if something goes wrong in a particular room.

What matters most here is having the peace of mind that comes with professional certification. As a NICEIC Electrician, MJP Electrical approaches these installations with a focus on tidy workmanship that keeps your living space functional during the transition. We move away from guesswork, ensuring your new panel is sized correctly for your current load while providing a clean, organized setup that meets all current regulations.
A smart way to go about it is to prioritize a system that scales with your future plans. Whether you are looking to add an EV charger down the road or just want to stop worrying about the old switchboard sparking, our team handles the heavy lifting. You get clear pricing and a finished result that ensures your home’s electricity flows safely and reliably.

The consumer unit is the heart of your electrical system, and comes in many shapes and sizes. The unit distributes the electricity, via fuses or circuit breakers, to the different circuits such as sockets or lighting. Modern consumer units are designed to help reduce electrical risks by incorporating Residual Current Devices (RCDs). In the event if an electrical fault, these devices disconnect the electrical supply thus reducing the risk of electric shock or fire. Miniature circuit breakers also make resetting the system more convenient than replacing old style fuse-wire.
A Consumer Unit or Fuse board is the single most important electrical device in any building. It protects electrical appliances from damage and more importantly, human beings from electrical shock.
The cost of installing a new consumer unit is around £250 to £600. However, this may increase if you require an electrical installation condition report, as this normally costs around £100 to £300 depending on the size of your property.
8hrs inclusive of testing and certification.
You should contact us if you suspect that any of the following may apply to your old fusebox
- The fuse-board cover is missing
- The fuse-board is damaged
- There are any exposed live parts
- The fuse-board is showing signs of over-heating
- The fuse-board is overloaded
- RCD protection is not provided
A fuse box and a consumer unit serve the same purpose. They distribute electricity in your house through multiple circuits and instantly turn the power off whenever a power overload occurs on one of the circuits, which is commonly known as “tripping”
In short No. Unsafe Yes, Non-compliant with the current regulations (BS7671:2008) If the fusebox is old and has fuse wire type fuses, it is worth upgrading it, as modern ones have RCD protection built in, which will literally save your life in the event of a fault.
Basically speaking, any consumer unit without an RCD needs an upgrade. This doesn’t always mean a whole new consumer unit so it is essential you speak to a registered, qualified electrician who can decide what needs to be done
